Background

Population-based cancer registration is a pillar of cancer control and research. To address specific educational needs identified in the collaborative program “Targeting childhood cancer through the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (ChildGICR),” the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital (SJCRH), in collaboration with the Cancer Institute (W.I.A) are pleased to announce the regional ChildGICR course on Childhood Cancer Registration. The course faculty includes international experts in cancer registration and paediatric oncologists.

Format

The training will be offered as an online course. The local course coordinator is Cancer Institute (W.I.A). The course will be delivered over five weeks, with five 4-hour live online sessions to be held from 2 pm to 6 pm (Indian Standard Time) once a week on Thursdays 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 September 2022.

Aim

The course will focus on the fundamentals of childhood cancer population-based registration. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define the principles of population-based cancer registration and illustrate the specifics of registration of childhood cancer
  • Describe childhood cancer burden and identify the key sources of information
  • Understand and apply principles and application of classification and staging of childhood cancers
  • Explain how collected data are validated, analyzed, and used
  • Access support networks of colleagues and contribute to their development

 

Target Participants

The course is intended for up to 30 participants. Health professionals from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are invited to apply. Priority will be given to applicants involved in establishing or strengthening population-based cancer registration of childhood cancer in these countries. All applicants must be fluent in English, the working language of the course, and must have adequate equipment to participate in online sessions and use online course platform. The participants will be required to prepare adequately for the course and participate actively in all live sessions.

Deadline for applications is 30 June 2022
The Selection Committee consists of several members of the Course Faculty. The selected candidates will be notified by 22 July 2022.
