Rationale:

Population-based cancer registration is a pillar of cancer control and research. To address specific educational needs identified in the collaborative programme “Targeting Childhood Cancer through the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (ChildGICR)”, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (SJCRH), in collaboration with Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC), are pleased to announce the regional ChildGICR course on Childhood Cancer Registration. The course faculty includes international experts and trainers in cancer registration and paediatric oncologists.

Format:

The training will be offered as an online course. The local course coordinator is NCDC. The course will be delivered in five 4-hour online sessions from 11 am to 3 pm GET (Tbilisi time) every day from Monday 19 to Friday 23 June 2023.

Aim:

The course will focus on the fundamentals of population-based registration of childhood cancer. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define the principles of population-based cancer registration and illustrate the specifics of registration of childhood cancer
  • Describe the burden of childhood cancer and identify the key sources of information
  • Understand and apply the principles of classification and staging of childhood cancers
  • Explain how the collected data are validated, analysed, and used.

Target Participants:

The course is intended for up to 30 participants. Health professionals from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, the Republic of Moldova, Türkiye, and Ukraine are invited to apply. Priority will be given to applicants who are involved in establishing or strengthening population-based registration of childhood cancer in these countries. All applicants must be fluent in English, the working language of the course, and must have adequate skills and equipment to participate in online sessions and use the online course platform. The participants will be required to study and prepare for the course and to participate actively in all live sessions. They may be asked to deliver topical presentations.
